🔭 Hypothetical Megastructures

These are all hypothetical megastructures that have been proposed in science fiction and scientific literature as ways to harness the energy of a star or a galaxy, or as habitats for advanced civilizations.

Dyson Sphere: A theoretical structure proposed by physicist Freeman Dyson in 1960, consisting of a swarm of satellites or habitats arranged in a spherical shell around a star to capture its energy.


Kardashev Ring: A theoretical structure proposed by physicist Nikolai Kardashev, consisting of a ring-shaped structure around a star, where the inhabitants would harness the energy of the star to power their civilization.


Tipler Cylinder: A hypothetical structure proposed by physicist Frank Tipler, consisting of a long, spinning cylinder of neutron-degenerate matter, which could be used to travel through time.


Matrioshka Brain: A hypothetical structure proposed by science fiction author Robert Bradbury, consisting of a Dyson sphere with nested layers of computational power, allowing for extremely advanced intelligence to exist.


Alderson Disk: A theoretical structure proposed by science fiction author Dan Alderson, consisting of a massive disk-shaped object that rotates around a star, providing living space for a vast number of inhabitants.


Ringworld: A science fiction concept proposed by author Larry Niven, consisting of a massive, artificial ring that orbits around a star, providing living space for its inhabitants.

While many of these structures are purely speculative and may not be physically possible with our current understanding of science and engineering, they continue to inspire scientific inquiry and imagination, and the search for evidence of advanced civilizations that may have built them.
